No free lunches

As I was patting my back for stealing the perfect lunch spot where no one can see me, Steven approached my table with my entire team. My first impressions about him were- 'warm'. With this background I was comfortable with him joining by my side, however I would have enjoyed eating lunch with myself. He broached a sensitive yet interesting subject and I knew I have many things to express about the same. He asked me " What's the trend in India regarding the 'Solution Delivery Centers' ? ". To clarify 'Solution Delivery Center' is ( for the ease of explanation and all practical purposes) every IT firm in India, in further simplistic terms- Cheap IT labor centers. I was all up to discuss the subject but then I knew I wouldn't be able to sound sophisticated talking about this, given I have such strong opinions about the same. Steven comforted me unintentionally when he announced he belonged to SDC as well a decade ago. I explained that many millenials chose out of SDC to be part of something broader, in other words, client-facing with an additional caveat of wanting to earn in dollars. However, I wanted to bring to light that SDC employees are much more than the assumed connotation of their roles. While he agreed, he added that one shouldn't worry about such miniscule prejudices.

At this point he chose to reveal to me a very interesting dimension to growing up by presenting the same as making your way up to a pyramid.

Level 1 - 'How'

First few years of learning must be directed to include every possible 'How'. For example- How to code, How to talk, How to work etc. This is the base of the pyramid, signifying most investment and time and interestingly more space to learn and relearn.

Level 2 - 'What'

Knowing how, one must transition to 'What'. To elaborate- What is being done, what must be done and similar. This is not necessarily an upgrade but an opportunity to better understand and manage the 'How' to create to value and most importantly synergies. The lesser base area imposes restrictions.

Level 3- 'Why'

You are here! The top and you know 'why' the 'what' is being done and 'How' it is being done and you are at the spot to justify. This is the aerial view and while you are here, watch out!

While Steven has grown to becoming my favorite person so far, I respect him for the time he invests in me. The genuinity I sense around this man encourages me to imbibe and soak up his goodness (should that be possible). To this I bow in respect.
